NWSL announces home openers for 2017 regular season

CHICAGO (Feb. 21, 2017) – The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced today the schedule of home openers for the 2017 regular season. The 2017 NWSL season will kick off the weekend of April 15-16 with preseason training camps beginning on Monday, March 13.

The NWSL will play a 24-game regular season schedule and compete in a single table, with the teams each playing 12 home and 12 away games.

Through the NWSL’s partnership with A+E Networks, Lifetime will broadcast an NWSL Game of the Week every Saturday to provide fans throughout the country the opportunity to watch some of the best players in the world. A 30-minute pregame show will kick off each weekly broadcast.

NWSL Media will oversee the live streaming of all matches and produce the games in high definition on a soon to be announced platform and will also launch a re-designed NWSLSoccer.com and a new NWSL app on iOS and Android.

Eight of the 10 clubs in the league will open the 2017 NWSL season on April 15 – with the slate of four Saturday matches headlined by U.S. internationals and 2016 NWSL champions Lynn Williams and Samantha Mewis leading the North Carolina Courage versus Kristie Mewis, Nigeria international Francisca Ordega and the Washington Spirit in a rematch of last season’s NWSL Championship Game.

In the debut NWSL Game of the Week on Lifetime, the 2016 NWSL Shield winners Portland Thorns FC will host the Orlando Pride at Providence Park as U.S. international Tobin Heath, Canada international Christine Sinclair get set to go against U.S international Ashlyn Harris and Australia international Alanna Kennedy.

Also on April 15, Jess Fishlock, Lauren Barnes and Seattle Reign FC will host Costa Rica international Raquel Rodriguez, U.S. international Kelley O’Hara and Sky Blue FC – while U.S. international Kealia Ohai, Canada international Janine Beckie and the Houston Dash will face off against U.S. international Christen Press, Arin Gilliland and the Chicago Red Stars.

The opening weekend will conclude on Sunday, April 16, with U.S. international Becky Sauerbrunn, Shea Groom and two-time NWSL champions FC Kansas City welcoming England international Natasha Dowie, Canada international Allysha Chapman and the Boston Breakers to town.
