Men’s NCAA College Cup: Georgetown to face Maryland on Friday

The Georgetown University men’s soccer team (19-3-2) departed for the 2012 College Cup in Hoover, Ala., on Wednesday afternoon.  The third-seeded Hoyas will face the second-seeded University of Maryland Terrapins on Friday in the national semifinals at Regions Park.  Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET and the game will be televised live on ESPNU.

Georgetown advanced to its first College Cup in program history with a 3-1 victory over the University of San Diego on Saturday at North Kehoe Field.  The Toreros jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but an own goal evened the score.  Freshman forward Melvin Snoh (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep) scored the game winner in the 73rd minute and senior midfielder Andy Riemer (McLean, Va./Georgetown Prep) added an insurance goal in the 88th minute.

The Hoyas have only been to four NCAA Tournaments including 1994, 1997 and 2010 and prior to this season had not made it past the Sweet 16.  Already this season, the Blue & Gray has set the new program record for wins in a season with 19.

Junior forward Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) is one of 15 finalists for the top award in college soccer, the MAC Hermann Trophy.  The announcement will be made following the national championship game on Sunday.

The Terps (20-1-2) avenged their 2011 postseason loss to Louisville with a 3-1 win Saturday over the No. 10 seeded Cardinals in the quarterfinals at Ludwig Field. London Woodberry, Jake Pace and Patrick Mullins tallied goals for Maryland, which leads the nation in scoring with 2.61 goals per match.

The Hoyas are 0-27 all-time against the Terps falling in the last meeting in 2010 by a score of 2-1.
Friday’s contest will be televised live on ESPNU and WatchESPN.com.
