Georgetown men’s soccer posts fourth-consecutive shutout with 3-0 Marquette win

WASHINGTON (via Georgetown Univ) – The No. 10/7 Georgetown University men’s soccer squad shut out the Marquette University Golden Eagles (5-5-2, 1-2-1 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas are currently 8-2-2 on the season and 4-0-0 in BIG EAST Conference play, tying the squad for first place with No. 1/1 Creighton University.

“Anytime you see a team pack it in like that, it’s patience,” said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. “That first goal was what you need, if you create that first goal the whole game changes and space opens up.”

Marquette came out intending to pack it in on defense and allow the Hoyas possession. Georgetown kept the ball, but had few attacking opportunities. The first came from senior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) who fired from outside the box, but MU keeper Luis Barraza made a big save.

Marquette’s first chance of the game came on a counter as Toby Howell managed to get past the backline and fired from the top of the box forcing GU freshman goalkeeper JT Marcinkowki (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) to dive to his right to keep it scoreless.

In the 27th minute, junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) had almost the same look as Allen with another impressive rip, but Barraza once again came up with a diving stop.

Barraza continued to hold it together for Marquette as junior defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) forced a turnover and slipped it to Muyl who got a great look but it was stopped again.

That would be the last chance of the half as the teams went into the break in a scoreless tie.

The game changed in the 47th minute as Georgetown managed to get through the compact MU defense. A ball was sent to senior defender Cole Seiler (Anderson, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School) at the endline who headed it back in to the near post. The ball bounced to Muyl who one-timed it to sophomore Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac). The midfielder buried it into the net past an outstretched Barraza to make it 1-0 early in the second half.

Minutes later, Allen had a chance and the rebound went into the middle of the box where Muyl had a scissors kick go high as GU was on the attack.

The Hoyas added a security goal in the 60th minute as senior defender Josh Turnley (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) served in a ball over the heads of the defense to Allen on the right side. A composed Allen fired into the net beating Barraza to make it 2-0 and give GU some breathing room.

The goals kept coming as senior midfielder Melvin Snoh (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep) tallied his first goal of the year in the 71st minute. Junior forward Brett Campbell (Wallingford, Pa./The Haverford School) sent it down the right sideline to senior midfielder David Witkoff (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) who passed it into the box. Snoh was flying to the near post and shot it into the back of the net to make it 3-0 putting the game out of reach for Marquette.

That score would stand as the final as the Hoyas cruised to victory.

Georgetown outshot Marquette, 21-5, and took nine corner kicks to MU’s one. Barraza took the loss in the net with seven saves, while Marcinkowski was awarded the win with two saves on the afternoon.

With the win, the Hoyas continued an eight-game unbeaten streak and posted its fourth-consecutive shutout. GU has not conceded a goal in conference play.
