The MLS Disciplinary Committee has suspended Seattle Sounders FC defender Leo González one game and fined him an undisclosed amount for endangering the safety of his opponent in the 88th minute of the Sounders game against Philadelphia Union on May 5. González stepped on the leg of prone Union defender Sheanon Williams. (VIDEO)
González will serve his suspension this Wednesday when FC Dallas host Sounders FC at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Also today, MLS announced that an independent review panel – consisting of representatives of the Canadian Soccer Association, the Professional Referee Organization (PRO), and U.S. Soccer – has unanimously determined that New England Revolution forward Fernando Cardenas was incorrectly shown the red card in the 81st minute against Real Salt Lake. (VIDEO) Utilizing the review process instituted prior to First Kick 2012, New England Revolution appealed the referee’s decision. After examining the play, the panel determined that the referee made an obvious error in the disciplinary sanction, and MLS has rescinded the one-game suspension and fine for Cardenas.
Fines collected will be donated to the charitable partners of MLS W.O.R.K.S. and the MLS Players Union.
