Development Academy: Virginia Rush, Baltimore Bays Chelsea look to right selves after tough losses

By Jimmy LaRoue

While Baltimore Bays Chelsea will be looking to bounce back after tough losses to D.C. United, Virginia Rush will still be looking to move up in the Atlantic Division standings after losses to Players Development Academy.

Rush and Bays face off Saturday at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex – Field 6 (U-18s – 12 p.m., U-16s – 2:30 p.m.), the first of three straight at home for Rush.

Rush’s U-18s (0-3-1), still looking for their first win of the season, are led by two-goal scorer Mason Duke, while Bays (3-2-0), coming off of their second loss of the season, are led by Yaw Amankwa, who has scored four goals.

In the U-16 matchup, Bays (4-1-0) lost a close matchup to United last week and are led by five-goal scorer Abdallah Bangura and have gotten two more goals from Joseph Hall. Rush (1-3-0), meanwhile, has struggled to score goals in the early going, but is led by James Ellis, Jr., who has two of the team’s three goals on the season.

On Sunday, a few other local teams are in action, as McLean Youth Soccer hosts PA Classics (U-18s – 9 a.m.,U-16s – 11:30 a.m. – Spring Hill Park – Field 5 Turf).

McLean’s U-18s have started strong, and are in a three-way tie for first with D.C. United and PA Classics at 13 points. Matthew Ledder leads McLean with four goals and an assist, while four other players for McLean have two goals each. PA Classics is led by Joseph Julius’s six goals.

McLean’s U-16s, meanwhile, have given up just six goals in six matches, but have struggled to score goals, putting just three in the net while starting out at 1-5-0 on the season. PA Classics’ U-16s, coming off of wins against both Richmond academy teams last weekend, are 4-2-2 and are in a three-way tie for second place with 12 points, six behind undefeated D.C. United (6-0-0).

In other matches, the Richmond Kickers host Potomac at Ukrop Park – Field 2 (U-18s – 11 a.m., U-16s – 1:30 p.m.). The Kickers U-16s (0-6-0), as well as Potomac’s U-16s (0-4-1) are looking for their first win of the season. Matthew Gillis leads Potomac with two goals, while Adrian Bills has also tallied two for the Kickers.

The Kickers U-18s have fared better than their younger counterparts, going 2-2-2 over their first six matches and feature two, three-goal scorers in Finnlay Wyatt and Tyler Slayton. However, the Kickers are 0-2-1 in their last three matches after opening the season with two wins in their first three matches. Potomac’s U-18s, at 0-5-1, have had trouble scoring goals, scoring two of their three goals this season in a Sept. 30 tie with Richmond Strikers.
