Midlothian, Va. – Trevor Knight scored the lone goal of the match in overtime as Beach FC U15B Red defeated Herndon Boca Juniors 1-0 to win the Virginia State Cup Under-15 Boys title Sunday at SportsQuest.
The victory means Beach FC U15 Red will advance to the U.S. Youth Soccer Region I championships in June 2012.
“It played out the way I thought it would,” said Beach FC coach Wayne Pratt. “We had a little scout on them from yesterday. They try to get it forward as quickly as they can. They play direct with it and we just needed to have a little patience and continue playing the way we played.”
That strategy was successful in spurts for Beach FC.
“At times, things didn’t go very well,” Pratt said. “We got a couple of chances, and the longer it went on, the [more] I thought we were going to come out on top.”
Pratt said the longer Beach FC held the ball, the better their chances would be to win the match, and they used their athleticism and team speed to their advantage.
“We just wanted a lot more of the ball,” Pratt said. “We got it. We panicked a few times, but for the most part, it played out well.”
Pratt said the win meant a lot for the club, and said it was a total team effort of the 17 players, though he noted his defending and goalkeeping was particularly strong over the course of the weekend.
“It’s bragging rights,” Pratt said. “We played these guys last year. They beat us in PKs last year, and my boys wanted it again. It’s good on the grand scheme of things and it’s a stepping-stone for bigger and better things, but I suppose we’re the best team in Virginia, so I’m happy with that.
“That’s what you play for.”
