USSDA Northeast Division playoff race heating up

U.S. Soccer Development Academy clubs in the Potomac region have an eventful weekend ahead which includes tests against PDA and Everton FC Westchester, along with several high-stakes local match-ups in the Atlantic Division.

In the U-13/14 age group, Richmond United plays host to red hot PDA on Saturday morning. Led by dynamic goal scorer John Murphy and one of the deepest rosters in the Development Academy, PDA has earned a point in each of its last eight matches dating back to October.

In other U-13/14 action, SAC is facing Continental FC DELCO at home on Saturday and will be tasked with slowing down Juan Blanco, who leads DELCO with 6 goals and is coming off a hat-trick against

Baltimore Bays in their last match. Local matches include Bays playing D.C. United on Saturday and PSWI Courage hosting Richmond United on Sunday. U.S. Youth National Team forward Eric Calvillo will present another major challenge for Richmond just one day after they take on Murphy and the rest of PDA’s attack. Richmond’s defense is giving up only 1 goal per game so far in 2015 with a 2-0-1 record. They shut out Lehigh Valley United 2-0 in their last outing.

U-15/16 match-ups include Richmond United vs. PDA, Baltimore Bays vs. D.C. United and Northeast Division club Everton FC Westchester traveling in from New York to face Bethesda-Olney on Saturday and Bays on Sunday. D.C. United, Bethesda-Olney and Richmond United are clumped together in the Atlantic Division table as the playoff chase heats up. PDA (35 pts.) has a firm grasp on the division’s third playoff spot as of now, Bethesda-Olney (28 pts.) holds a Wild Card bid and D.C. United (24 pts.) and Richmond United (24 pts.) reamin in striking distance.

The same set of match-ups will be played in the U-17/18 age group, where D.C. United is second in the Atlantic Division only behind New York Red Bulls, who hold the No. 1 overall seed entering the weekend. United is led by University of Maryland commit Eryk Williamson, whose 16 goals is the second-most in the Eastern Conference and ninth in the entire DA.

Samson Sergi (7 goals) and Ibrahima Kouyate (6 goals) have been a dynamic tandem for Bethesda-Olney, which is fifth in the Atlantic Division and still in contention for a playoff spot. Eighth place Richmond United could help D.C. United by beating PDA on Saturday at Ukrop Park, and Bays – still seeking their first win of the season – will have a chance to play spoiler against D.C. on Saturday before playing a middle-of-the-back Everton team on Sunday.
