SEATTLE — Reign FC general manager Amy Carnell resigned for personal reasons, team owner Bill Predmore confirmed to Cascadia Soccer Wire on Monday evening. The club appointed head coach Laura Harvey to take over and serve in a dual role.
“We don’t expect any bumps in the road from the transition,” Predmore said. “It’s something that we’ve had some time to think through and get ready for, so we don’t see this impacting us in any material way. The transition has really already happened. The players and the staff know, and we’ve talked through what we’re doing as a result of this.”
Reached via text message, Carnell said she could not comment for this story.
“I want to thank the club for the opportunity to help bring professional women’s soccer to Seattle,” Carnell said in a club press release. “I will always be a fan of the club and wish them all the best for this season and beyond.”
Carnell was the club’s first employee, joining Reign FC from the Seattle Sounders Women. In 2012, she was instrumental in the Sounders Women signing national team stars Alex Morgan, Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe and Sydney Leroux.
Harvey’s new role is similar to the one she had at Arsenal, where she coached before accepting the job with Reign FC in the new National Women’s Soccer League.
“It probably won’t change my role too much,” Harvey said. “The big decisions within the club (were) a three-way conversation that will now turn into a two-way conversation. … The biggest thing we wanted to make sure collectively is that the players on the field aren’t going to be affected, which they aren’t, and they won’t be.”
Harvey said she is accustomed to the widespread nature of the dual responsibilities that come with doing the general manager and head coach’s job at the same time.
“The role of the GM can be about dealing with players, dealing with contracts, dealing with recruitment, which I’ve been involved with all the way through this process since I took the job,” she said. “Back home, working at a club like Arsenal, that was just something that was part of the head coach or manager’s role — as we would term it — anyway. So it’s a role that I’m used to.”
Reign FC also finalized its roster for the 2013 inaugural season on Monday, releasing a list of 23 players that includes inactive United States national team league-allocated players Hope Solo (wrist injury), Amy Rodriguez (pregnant) and Megan Rapinoe (under contract with Lyon).
“We know, obviously, with Megan Rapinoe and Hope Solo potentially coming back at different times throughout the season that the roster may change,” Harvey said. “At the moment, if we’re going to characterize our team, we’re young and hungry.”
The club’s most notable final-day signing was forward Kristina Larsen, who played for the Atlanta Beat and St. Louis Athletica of WPS after a highly successful collegiate career at UCLA. She was a member of the U.S. under-17 national team and under-20 player pool.
“The last couple of spots within the roster were taken up through scouring all around the different leagues, previous WPS teams and trying to get as many players in front of our staff as we could,” Harvey said. “From that, we picked up Kristina Larsen.”
Seattle opens its season on Sunday away to the Chicago Red Stars before traveling to Portland on April 21 for the Thorns FC home opener at JELD-WEN Field.
