PWSI set to debut re-branded DMV Premier Cup

DMV Premier Cup Schedule: U13-U19 | U9-U12

A total of 91 U-13 to U-19 teams will compete in the opening weekend of the DMV Premier Cup, the newly branded preseason tournament hosted by Prince William Soccer, Inc (PWSI).

Formerly known as the Toys For Tots Tournament, the new event name further emphasizes the competitive direction the club is aiming to take the event while still maintaining the long-standing relationship with the charitable organization. As the new name indicates, PWSI Tournaments is seeking to grow the DMV Premier Cup into a preseason destination for the top D.C., Maryland and Virginia youth soccer clubs. The event is meant to provide a wide range of competition levels and showcase opportunities, accommodating the first, second and even third teams of the region’s premier clubs.

“We do have some of the top local clubs’ first, second and even third teams, which makes for a good mix of competitive levels,” said PWSI Tournament Director Rob Cheshire. “We want to keep it that way and be able to offer clubs an option to bring all of their teams with us.”

The first running of the DMV Premier Cup, which begins this weekend and concludes September 5-6 with the U-9 to U-12 weekend, will feature 200 total squads representing Virginia and Maryland clubs.

Participating clubs in the opening U-13 to U-19 weekend include: Annandale United FC, Arlington Soccer Association, Beach FC, Burke Athletic Club, Capital FC, Chantilly Youth Association (CYA), Commonwealth Futbol Club, Fairfax Police Youth Club (FPYC), FCV Ashburn, Lee Mount Vernon SC (LMVSC), McLean Youth Soccer, Northern Virginia SC (NVSC), Old Dominion FC, Reston Soccer Association, Saint Mary’s Soccer, Springfield South County Youth Club (SYC), Stafford Soccer, Vienna Youth Soccer, Virginia Rush, Virginia Soccer Association (VSA), Vista, Winchester United and host club PWSI.

The U-13 to U-19 age groups feature 18 total flights across the boys and girls divisions. Top flights are known as Premier brackets and second flights are called Cup brackets.

A few marquee teams competing in the opening weekend include the McLean U-13 Pre-ECNL, U-15 ECNL and U-17 ECNL sides each competing up an age group on the girls side. Along with the rising McLean ECNL U-17 squad, the U-18 Premier division will include two 2014 Virginia State Cup semifinalists in PWSI Courage 97 Red and Annandale United FC, which is also coming off a run to the Region I Finals. Reigning Virginia State Cup champions PWSI Courage 01 Red will be competing in the U-15 age group on the boys side.

DMV Premier Cup matches will be played on turf and natural grass fields across Prince William County at Chinn Park, Hellwig Park, Howison Park, Long Park and Valley View Park.

Opening games kick off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 29.
