D.C. United defeats New England 2-1 in MLS Cup Playoff opener

Washington, D.C. (Via D.C. United) – D.C. United advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the MLS Cup Playoffs with a 2-1 win over the New England Revolution in its first-ever appearance in the Knockout Round.

Fabián Espíndola assisted on goals by Chris Pontius just before halftime and Chris Rolfe in the 83rd minute after Juan Agudelo scored on a first-half bicycle kick for the Revolution.

The Black-and-Red will host the first game of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Sunday, Nov. 1, at RFK Stadium against either No. 1 seed New York Red Bulls or No. 2 Columbus Crew SC. D.C. United will face New York if Montreal defeats Toronto FC on Thursday, or they will face Columbus if Toronto beats Montreal.

*The victory was D.C. United’s third in four postseason meetings with New England.

*Fabián Espíndola recorded the second and third playoff assists of his career.

*Chris Rolfe scored his fifth playoff goal.

*Chris Pontius scored his first playoff goal.

*Nick DeLeon recorded his second playoff assist.

*Bill Hamid finished with three saves.

*Including the regular season, D.C. United recorded its ninth come-from-behind win in 2015.
