Potomac area Development Academy preview: Local teams cling to playoff spots entering final weekend

After a long season of rigorous competition, the U.S. Soccer Development Academy regular season comes down to one final weekend with plenty of playoff spots still to be decided in the U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups. The U-13/14 age group winds down over the next two weekends leading up to the end-of-season tournament at Grand Park Sports Campus in Indiana.

This weekend in Potomac area action, Prince William Courage U-13/14 hosts Baltimore Bays Chelsea on Saturday afternoon in the team’s final home match. PWSI is coming off a 3-2 road loss to Soccer Association of Columbia last weekend in which Youth National Team player Eric Calvillo had a first half brace, bringing his season total to 14. Bays, coming off a 4-2 loss to PA Classics, will host Philadelphia Union in their home finale on June 13.

In other U-13/14 action, Bethesda-Olney plays host to New York Red Bulls, Richmond United travels to Maryland to face SAC on Saturday and D.C. United plays Pennsylvania side Lehigh Valley United on the RFK Stadium turf field Sunday at noon. Bethesda won its two most recent matches 5-2 and 2-0 over New Jersey Cedar Stars Academy and Philadelphia Union, with six players combining to score the team’s seven goals. Red Bulls had won seven in a row before losing 2-1 to Philadelphia Union on May 30.

Richmond United is unbeaten in its last five matches, most recently a 5-1 win over Bethesda-Olney on May 10. Luke Mega had a brace, scoring his team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the season. SAC is on a two-game win streak of its own with Henrik Struck put up four goals in that span.

Jordan Matamoro-Mejias netted his fourth goal of the season in D.C. United’s last outing, a 4-1 road loss to PDA. Valentine Perevalov leads Lehigh Valley United with nine goals.

In the U-15/16 age group, D.C. United faces Philadelphia Union and NJCSA on the road, while Baltimore Bays Chelsea also travels north to play Red Bulls and Bethesda-Olney visits PA Classics. United is clinging to the 11th and final wild card spot, going up against the No. 2 overall playoff seed in Philadelphia and a 5-16-4 NJCSA side. After falling out of the playoff pool in recent weeks, United has played its way back in with critical wins over PDA and Continental FC DELCO on May 23 and May 31. SahrFelix Sandy scored in both victories, including a clutch game-winner in the 73rd minute against PDA.

Bays visits No. 1 overall seed New York Red Bulls, led by Brian Saramago whose 23 goals is the fifth-most in the East Conference. Baltimore was shut out 1-0 by PA Classics in their last match on May 31 and before that defeated NJCSA 3-2 on May 10 as the team’s top scorer Brady O’Connor (9 goals) recorded a hat trick.

Bethesda-Olney U-15/16 had its four-game win streak come to an end on May 24 in a 3-2 loss to Philadelphia Union, but the team remains in possession of the No. 21 playoff spot after a remarkable late-season run. Bethesda features one of the most balanced attacks in the Academy with 12 different players having scored more than one goal each on the season. Matthew Di Rosa (10 goals), Juan Ramirez (9 goals) and Elijah Amo (8 goals) are the leading scorers for Bethesda, which goes up a against a formidable opponent in PA Classics (10-9-6).

No. 10 overall playoff seed and second-ranked team in the Atlantic Division, D.C. United U-17/18 faces wild card team Philadelphia Union on Saturday morning. United, led by Eryk Williamson (20 goals), Jorge Calix (11 goals) and Lucas Mendes (11 goals), is 17-6-2 on the season. Union is 12-7-6 holding the No. 7 wild card slot. The sides played to a 1-1 draw in their last meeting on April 12.

Bethesda-Olney U-17/18 also has control of the 11th and final wild card spot just like their U-15/16s, going up against PA Classics (11-10-4) in their regular season finale. Prior to Bethesda’s 2-1 loss to Philadelphia on May 24, the team had been unbeaten in their previous eight matches. Ibrahima Kouyate (13 goals) and Samson Sergi (10 goals) are top playmakers for the Bethesda offense while Clay Thomas has been strong in net all season.

Bays will face a major test against No. 4 overall seed and Atlantic Division-leading New York Red Bulls (18-4-3). After winning two of three matches and allowing just one goal in that span, Bays fell 7-1 to PA Classics on May 31. New York, led by Juan Sanchez (16 goals) and one of the top attacks in the league, is coming off a tough 3-0 loss to Philadelphia Union.
