U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team plays Mexico to 1-1 draw

MEXICO CITY (Via U.S. Soccer) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team drew its counterparts from Mexico 1-1 in the first of two friendly matches between the teams at Mexico’s National Team Training Center. Midfielder Maya Doms scored the USA’s lone goal, her fourth in 10 caps at the U-17 level.

The USA traveled to Mexico City after training in Sunrise, Florida for a few days and will face Mexico again on Nov. 18.

“Overall, I think our performance today was well below our own team standards,” U.S. head coach Mark Carr said. “We have great respect for Mexico, but we are definitely disappointed as a group and it’s a reminder for us all that there are no easy games in CONCACAF. We scored a nice goal early, but then didn’t push on from there and that allowed Mexico to gain momentum and get back in the game.”

The matches serve as excellent preparation for both teams ahead of the 2018 CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship. That tournament will be held in Nicaragua next spring and will qualify three teams for the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay.

The age cutoff for the next U-17 Women’s World Cup is players born on or after January 1, 2001, and Carr named 19 players born 2001 and three born in 2002 for these games.

The USA took a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute. Team captain Kennedy Wesley played a long ball past Mexico’s back four to forward Jordan Canniff who took it down the flank and crossed into the six-yard box where Doms finished smartly.

Mexico got its equalizer from the penalty spot in the 60th minute when Alison Gonzalez was taken down in the penalty box. Nicole Perez stepped up and scored on the ground into the lower right corner.

“We will recover, analyze ourselves and then focus on what we can improve,” Carr added. “What I do know about our team is that they will be hungry to improve on what we did today and will put in a much better performance against Mexico on Saturday. We did create the better chances over the entire match, but the longer it takes to get a second goal, it always gives the opponent belief.”
