RENTON – Seattle Sounders FC will host Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, July 19 on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.
“Tottenham Hotspur has established themselves as one of the top teams in arguably the toughest league in the world,” said Sounders FC Owner and General Manager Adrian Hanauer. “We are proud to have them be a part of this year’s friendly and will continue to strive to bring the strongest competition to CenturyLink Field.”
This will be the third U.S. Tour in five seasons for Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs will also face the Chicago Fire on July 26 at Toyota Park. A host of supporter events will be planned in both cities.
Founded in 1882, Tottenham Hotspur, or Spurs, has won a major trophy in each of the past six decades, including two league championships and eight FA Cups. Spurs currently sit seventh in the Barclays Premier League, level with Manchester United and three points off fourth position, with just one loss in its past seven league outings. After finishing fifth in the league table last season, Spurs qualified for the UEFA Europa League, winning its group with a 100% record to advance to the Round of 32.
“Preseason preparations are always key ahead of a new campaign,” said Spurs Head Coach Tim Sherwood. “We all know that the US has first-class facilities, while Major League Soccer is growing each year. The MLS opposition we face will be in the middle of their seasons and playing in their home stadiums so we can expect strong tests from both Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire. The Club is rightfully proud of its large and growing fan base in the States and we look forward to meeting with as many of our loyal fans from across the country as we can.”
Sounders FC midfielder Clint Dempsey scored 12 goals in 43 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur in 2012-13, and former Sounders FC goalkeeper Kasey Keller made 85 appearances for Spurs between 2001-05.
Sounders FC has hosted seven international friendlies over the past five seasons, including two matches against Chelsea FC and one match against Manchester United. In its last friendly, Sounders FC fell to Chelsea, 4-2, on July 18, 2012.
