UMBC women set to compete in George Mason Tournament

BALTIMORE (Via UMBC) – UMBC women’s soccer travels to Fairfax, Va., for the George Mason Tournament over Labor Day weekend for matchups against Appalachian State and UNC Wilmington. The Retrievers open the tournament versus the Mountaineers on Friday, Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. and close out action on Sunday, Sept. 6 at noon against the Seahawks at George Mason Stadium.

Scouting the Retrievers (1-2-1)

-All four of UMBC’s games have been decided by one goal or less. The Retrievers are coming off their first victory of the season on Sundayagainst American, 2-1. UMBC eliminated a one-goal first half deficit by scoring a pair of goals within a one-minute span of game action.

-Sophomore midfielder Gabby Boehmer (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) scored her fourth goal of the year with 13 seconds left in the first half versus the Eagles to tie the contest at one apiece. Senior back Bria Bass (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) tallied her first goal since her rookie campaign, marking the game-winner, just 46 seconds into the second half. After tallying one goal and one assist in her rookie campaign, Boehmer has exploded for four goals in four games in her sophomore season.

-Senior back Amira Walcott (Beltsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) tallied all four of her points over the weekend, including a three-point effort in the Retrievers’ double-overtime loss to George Mason on Friday, Aug. 28. In her first three seasons, Walcott combined for five goals and four assists for 14 points total.

Scouting the Mountaineers (2-1-0)

-Appalachian State has won two of its first three contests to open the season. The Mountaineers defeated Mercer, 2-1, in their latest contest on Sunday afternoon. The Apps used a penalty kick from senior back Merlin Beckwith in the 80th minute to pick up their second victory of the season.

-Beckwith has registered both of the Mountaineers’ game-winners on penalty kicks. She leads the team with six points on the year, added two assists to her two goals.

-Senior goalkeeper Megan Roberson has started all three contests in net for Appalachian State. She has tallied four saves and posted a 1-1 record.

Scouting the Seahawks (1-3-0)

-UNC Wilmington, which opens its season with six straight matchups away from its home field, has dropped three of its first four contests of the 2015 campaign, including Sunday’s matchup at No. 23 Clemson. The Tigers used a pair of second-half goals to defeat the Seahawks, 2-1.

-Senior midfielder Katrina Guillou registered her team-leading second goal of the season against the nationally-ranked Tigers. The Seahawks have four players that have scored a goal on the season, with red-shirt senior midfielder Stephanie Bronson’s goal representing the team’s game-winner.

-Juniors Carolyn Huddy and Liisa Rahkola have each seen action in net on the year, with Huddy earning all four starts on the season. Huddy has faced 61 shots thus far and made 13 saves.
