No. 7 Virginia Tech women play No. 1 Florida State to 0-0 draw

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Via Virginia Tech) – Top-ranked Florida State and seventh-ranked Virginia Tech played to a double overtime, scoreless draw in top 10 ACC women’s soccer action on Thursday night at Thompson Field. The Hokies are now 13-2-2 overall and 5-2-1 in conference action. Florida State is now 13-1-2 overall and 6-0-2 in ACC play.

“I thought we played well tonight,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “We played gritty and, as normal, our games with Florida State get a little bit hectic and crazy, because it’s a battle. It was two very good teams battling. “

The Seminoles controlled the offensive momentum in the first half, out shooting the Hokies 6-2. FSU’s best chance of scoring came in the 13th minute of play, as the Hokies were called for a foul in the box and FSU was awarded a penalty kick. But the kick was forced wide and the match remained scoreless.

In the second half, Tech picked up the offensive intensity, as Tech out shot FSU, 7-3 in the period. But both defenses were strong throughout and the teams finished 90 minutes of regulation scoreless. In the two overtime periods, but teams had scoring opportunities, but could not find the net and the match ended in a scoreless draw.

Kaylyn Smith recorded six saves for the Hokies, while Cassie Miller stopped the Hokies’ only shot on goal. Tech attempted twice as many corner kicks as the Seminoles, 6-3.

“I thought we were clean, defensively,” Adair added. “They’re very good, very good up front and very attacking-minded. We tried to disrupt their tempo by trying to keep our own possession. Otherwise, you are defending much of the game against a very good possession team. We wanted to keep the ball as much as we could.”

Tech returns to action on Sunday afternoon, as they host Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. at Thompson Field. The match is the final regular season home match and the Hokies’ five seniors will be honored in pre-game ceremonies.
