No. 3 Georgetown men fall to South Florida 2-0

WASHINGTON (Via Georgetown University) – The No. 3/3 Georgetown University men’s soccer squad (0-1-1) fell, 2-0, to the University of South Florida Bulls (2-0-0) on Monday morning in Tampa, Fla. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday evening, but was postponed due to inclement weather in the area.

USF controlled possession early in the game getting four corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of the half. In the 25th minute, Hoya freshman keeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) was forced to make the first save of the game to keep it scoreless.

The corners proved to be too much as the Bulls got on the board first finding the back of the net on a Brandon Riley header from a corner to make it 1-0 in the 28th minute.

USF continued to push following the goal and forcing Marcinkowski to come up with stops as well as the defensive backline to slow it down.

At the break, the Hoyas trailed, 1-0.

Sophomore forward Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) got a shot off early in the second, but the Bulls continued to press getting chance after chance.

Midway through, senior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph’s) had a header go wide.

With 20 minutes to go, the Hoyas finally looked dangerous as junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) hit the post, and GU generated back-to-back chances. However, the game became out of reach as USF managed a second goal coming from the left side to make it 2-0 in the 78th minute.

As time wound down, the Blue & Gray tried to get something going, but couldn’t, eventually falling, 2-0.

Georgetown was outshot, 15-9, and took just two corner kicks to USF’s nine. Marcinkowski took the loss with four saves in the game, while Spasoje Stefanovic was awarded the win with one save.

Georgetown will host its home opener on Friday as the squad welcomes No. 25/RV Akron to Shaw Field for a 4 p.m., matchup. The squad will follow that up with a contest on Monday against No. 1/2 UCLA at Shaw Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
