Maryland men’s soccer defeats St. John’s 4-0 on Sunday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Via University of Maryland) – Sparked by three goals in a five-minute span to begin the second half, the No. 13 Maryland men’s soccer defeated St. John’s, 4-0, in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic Sunday.

Maryland (1-0-1) picked up scoring from freshmen Amar Sejdic (2) and Sebastian Elney and sophomore Jake Areman. Rookie keeper Dayne St. Clair secured his first shutout in goal, notching four saves.

After a scoreless double-overtime draw against No. 4 Notre Dame in the season opener Friday, Sejdic got the offense going with his first career tally as a Terp. Fellow classmate Diego Silva found the Louisville, Ky., native just outside the box and the midfielder finished beautifully to upper third for a 1-0 Terrapin lead.

The Terps wouldn’t find their way to the scoreboard again until the second half but when they did it was an absolute flurry.

Sejdic picked up his second goal of the match in the 51st minute. Areman drew in a slew of St. John’s defenders from the middle of the box and dished to a wide open Sejdic, who finished the play from close range.

Less than a minute later it would be Areman who would find the back of the net. Tsubasa Endoh snagged a ball off the goal line and found Areman with a perfectly-placed cross from six yards for a 3-0 Terrapin lead.

Elney capped the Terrapin scoring in the 56th minute after Mael Corboz’s long-serve found the freshman forward on the near sideline. The Boca Raton, Fla., product finished with his first goal at Maryland after a pair of touches to beat a Red Storm defender.

Maryland outshot St. John’s (0-2-0) 31-8 on the match. The Terps racked up 53 shots on the weekend. In total, Maryland rookies racked up eight points on the day.

“Overall this was a fantastic weekend,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “Coming off a very solid performance against Notre Dame, we followed it up with a great defensive performance against a tough St. John’s team. After getting some good chances Friday, we challenged our guys and we came up with four today and really I think could have even been more.”

The Terps return to College Park for a highly-anticipated home opener against UCLA at 7 p.m. on Friday at Ludwig Field.
