Yankuba Janneh hat trick among Development Academy highlights

By Jimmy LaRoue

In the northeast, Yankuba Janneh has started for the U-18s where he left off with the U-16s, tallying a hat trick to help lead BW Gottschee Academy’s U-18s of New York City (Cosmos Academy East) to a 5-2 win over Seacoast United in East Conference Northeast Division Development Academy action.

The win gives BW Gottschee Academy a 2-0-0 mark and the early lead in the division.

After Seacoast United’s Frantzdy Pierrot opened the scoring for Seacoast United in the 28th minute, Jannah, who scored 15 goals last season for the U-16s, scored the first of his three goals in the 36th minute, and added his second six minutes later. Seacoast’s Jacob Rosenkalt tied the match just before halftime.

In the second half, Alhoussain Bah put BW Gottschee up to stay in the 55th minute, with Janneh, who came to the U.S. from Gambia more than 10 years ago, scoring his third of the match in the 72nd minute. Ahmad Aly tacked on the team’s fifth goal of the day in the 90th minute.

Out west, in a battle of braces, Real Salt Lake AZ got a pair of braces, and San Juan Soccer Club got one in a 4-2 win for the Arizona club’s U-18s in West Conference Development Academy play that served as the opener of the 2012-13 season for both teams.

Jose Navarro opened the scoring for Real Salt Lake AZ in the first minute, followed by Riggs Lennon in the 16th minute. Navarro scored again in the 29th minute to get his brace first and put RSL AZ up 3-0, which would hold up until San Juan Soccer Club’s Steven Wright scored the first of his two goals in the 65th minute.

Wright cut the RSL AZ lead to 3-2 with his second goal in the 75th minute, but Lennon iced the match with his second goal in the 90th minute to provide the final margin.

San Diego Surf’s U-18s scored their first win of the season in a five-goal affair against De Anza Force, winning 3-2. Force’s Andy Perez opened the scoring in the fifth minute, but Surf’s Michael Griswald tied the match in the 29th minute, and Brian Iloski scored his second goal of the season to put Surf up 2-1 heading into halftime. Force’s Jason Romero tied the match in the 52nd minute on his second goal of the season, but Nick Gagliani scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 62nd minute.

The Surf U-16s, on the other hand, fell to 0-2-0 after another one-goal loss, this time 4-3 to De Anza Force. Force went up 2-0 midway through the first half on goals from Ramiro Molina and Aravind Sivakumar, with Surf’s Anthony Wright cutting the lead just before halftime. Force’s Matthew Powell scored his second goal of the season in the 49th minute before Surf picked up two goals from Gerardo Pedroza and John Aguilar to tie the match. However, Luis Nunez spelled the difference in the end, tacking on a goal in the 79th minute to give Force the win.

Texas Rush U-18s recovered from an opening weekend loss to Texans SC Houston, picking up a 1-0 win in Dallas against Andromeda as Bubacarr Jobe scored his second goal of the season in the 47th minute for the lone goal of the match.

Rush’s U-16s also rebounded from an opening week loss, shutting out Andromeda 2-0 on first half goals from Angel Lopez and Cesar Castaneda.

“The boys did exceptionally well this weekend to gain the results on the road against conference opponents,” Rush director of coaching Dave Dengerink said in a club release. “[It was] a very positive weekend for all concerned and we’ll use this success to build on in preparation for our next set of games.”

Sporting Kansas City’s U-16s and U-18s both picked up home wins against Colorado Rush last weekend–the U-16s winning 2-0, getting the match winner from Dakota Karns in the 67th minute, and the U-18s with a 3-0 win behind two goals from Cole Stevenson and another from last season’s leading scorer for SKC, Eduardo Moreno.

In a seven-goal thriller, Crew Soccer Academy’s U-16s squeaked out a 4-3 win over Indiana Fire Academy, having to hold on for a late Indiana Fire Academy rally that fell just short.

Crew Soccer Academy had gone up on two first half goals from Michael McCloskey and Noah Hutchins in the space of four minutes. After Indiana Fire Academy’s Will Lentz cut the lead in the 57th minute, Crew’s Silankonet Bayo and William Bayemi both scored in the next six minutes to extend the lead to 4-1. However, Jackson Yerkes cut the lead with a 74th minute goal, and six minutes later, Anthony Jimenez brought Indiana Fire within one, setting up a frantic final 10 minutes, but Crew held on.

In the Mid-Atlantic, D.C. United’s academy teams have gotten off to a strong start, with both their U-16s and U-18s moving to 2-0-0 after wins against Virginia Rush–the U-16s winning 3-0 and the U-18s scoring a 5-1 win. Baltimore Bays Chelsea’s two academy teams are also 2-0-0 after wins over FC DELCO. The Richmond Kickers and Richmond Strikers crosstown rivalry was renewed as the teams split academy games–the Strikers’ U-16s winning 2-0 and the Kickers’ U-18s taking a 4-0 win.
