USSDA Boys East Conference Recap: October 21-22, 2017

Several of the final remaining unbeaten teams took their first losses of the season while others earned pivotal wins on a weekend showcasing the high level of parity across the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference’s U-15, U-16/17 and U-18/19 age groups.

U-15

Northeast Division

The Northeast Division’s last two unbeaten teams, Montreal Impact and BW Gottschee, both lost for the first time all season on Saturday in tightly-contested road games. Montreal (6-1-0) fell to Seacoast United 1-0, with a 68th minute goal by Lex Dadmun proving to be the difference as Seacoast’s defense secured its third clean sheet of the season. BW Gottschee came up on the short end of a 3-2 result against New England Revolution, as second half goals by Revolution’s Colby Quinones (63′) and Jonathan Murphy (75′) fueled a comeback effort by the MLS academy on their home field, overcoming a 2-1 halftime deficit.

Oakwood SC, New York City FC and FC Westchester Armour all earned clean sheet wins on the weekend as well in Northeast Division play. Oakwood’s Brick Staeger recorded a second half brace in the team’s 4-0 win over New York SC, while NYCFC’s Mario Salguero netted a 46th minute game-winner in a 1-0 defensive battle against FC Greater Boston Bolts and three different players found the net for FC Westchester Armour in a 4-0 rout of Empire United. Westchester goalkeeper J. Quinn Closson claimed the clean sheet as defenders Heyson ArguetaNicholas Logan and Ivo Pasa played the full 80 minutes.

Atlantic Division

In the Atlantic Division, second place D.C. United Academy (6-0-3) became the first team to take points from first place New York Red Bulls (7-0-1), earning a scoreless draw on Saturday afternoon. New York goalkeeper Brian Toxtle and D.C.’s Teddy Hutman recorded clean sheets behind the MLS academies’ strong back lines, as both sides kept their unbeaten records in tact.

D.C. and New York each went on to pick up three points on Sunday, with United blanking Cedar Stars Academy – Monmouth 2-0 and the Red Bulls defeating Richmond United 3-0. D.C. goalkeeper Sebastian Conlon and the back line held Cedar Stars off the board while Christian Xantus (28′) and Brian Frenz (56′) provided the scoring. Toxtle and the Red Bulls defense extended the team’s shutout streak to five against Richmond, as Edwin Melendez (52′, 61′) had a brace in the second half and Thomas Tulgar added an 80th minute strike.

In another top of the table Atlantic Division match-up, third place PDA (6-2-1) defeated fourth place Bethesda SC (6-3-1) by a 3-1 scoreline, behind a second half surge fueled by goals from Raold Mitchell (49′), Kenan Hot (62′) and Nestor Cabrera (66′).

Elsewhere, Cedar Stars Academy – Monmouth claimed its first win of the season 4-0 over Richmond United, highlighted by a first half brace from Micaah Garnette and a second half brace from Joseph Daino.

Baltimore Armour and Continental FC DELCO each picked up their second wins of the season as well. Baltimore keeper Samuel Coss and the back line combined for a clean sheet while Joel Brown scored the game-winner in the 27th minute in a 1-0 win over Continental FC DELCO on Saturday. DELCO bounced back for a 1-0 shutout of PA Classics on Sunday behind Connor Anton‘s 63rd minute go-ahead strike.

Southeast Division

Southeast Division leader Concorde Fire (6-3-0) had a dominant showing at home with a 4-1 win against Boca United FC and a 6-2 rout of second place Orlando City SC (4-2-). Matthew Ushry led the attack with four goals on the weekend, including a hat trick effort against Orlando.

Second and third place Orlando and Weston FC (4-2-0) each split a pair of games on the weekend. Orlando opened the weekend with a 1-0 shutout of Atlanta United FC, as Luc Granitur scored the game’s only goal in the waning minutes of the second half. Weston FC edged North Carolina Youth FC 3-2 on Saturday before coming up just short in a 5-4 result on Sunday against NC Fusion. Weston’s Lorenzo Dimercurio and Fusion’s Colton Sessoms exchanged hat tricks in the high scoring affair.

Fourth place Charlotte Soccer Academy (5-2-2) collected all six points on a home-stand, defeating Chargers SC 2-1 and IMG Academy 3-0. John Trucillo sparked the attack by scoring a goal in each game.

U-16/17

Northeast Division

Northeast Division leaders Montreal Impact FC (5-1-0), BW Gottschee Academy (6-1-1) and Empire United (4-2-1) each took care of business, picking up three points on the weekend. Five different goal scorers fueled Montreal’s balanced attack and goalkeeper Benjamin Collins notched the clean sheet in a 5-0 rout of Seacoast United; Jonathan Ford led Gottschee with a brace in a 4-1 win over New England Revolution; and Empire United’s Ajab Ali (36′) and Ravi Travers (41′) netted goals near the end of the first half to overcome an early deficit in a 2-1 victory against in-state foe FC Westchester Armour.

In the only other Northeast match-up, FC Greater Boston Bolts held on for a 3-2 win over NYCFC after building a 3-0 lead on goals from Declan Sung (6′), Victor Viana (10′) and Dennis Ramirez (68′).

Atlantic Division

Atlantic Division powerhouse New York Red Bulls (8-0-0) continued a perfect start to the season with 2-0 and 4-2 home wins over D.C. United and Richmond United. Red Bulls goalkeeper Alex Bobocea and the back line combined for the team’s third shutout of the fall against D.C., and on the attacking side, Balthazar Saunders and Scott Taylor each scored goals in both games on the weekend.

Baltimore Armour (5-2-1) strengthened its campaign for playoff qualification with a pair of wins over Continental FC DELCO and Bethesda SC. After a 1-1 halftime deadlock, Armour broke out with three second half goals on Saturday in a 4-1 rout of FC DELCO, which included a brace from Kevin Medrano. Baltimore broke through in the second half once again on Sunday, scoring twice following a scoreless first half in a 2-0 win over Bethesda. Armour’s Shawn Diboti-Lobe scored a goal in each game on the weekend to help fuel the attack.

The Atlantic Division’s second place side, Philadelphia Union (3-0-3) remains undefeated following a thrilling 2-1 win over PA Classics. Philadelphia’s Ian Graham spotted the Union a 1-0 halftime lead, but PA Classics’ Griffin Garrard equalized in the 78th minute. Aboubacar Camara broke through in the 85th minute with the game-winner for the Union.

Fourth place PDA (4-2-2) put up four unanswered goals to defeat Bethesda SC 4-2 at home on Saturday afternoon. Bethesda’s Arjun Rohlfing-Das (18′, 22′) spotted the visitors with a 2-0 first half lead, before PDA’s Daniel Bateman (35′), Randy Arronis (37′) and Nigel Griffith (37′) led a furious rally to put the New Jersey side on top. Griffith added an insurance strike in the 61st minute to close the scoring.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic Division, PA Classics notched its first win of the season 3-1 over FC DELCO, and Cedar Stars Academy – Monmouth claimed its second, defeating Richmond United 2-1.

Southeast Division

The Southeast Division was busy with 13 total games over the weekend, and at the end of it, all 14 teams now have at least two losses and at least one win in the very evenly-matched region.

First place Atlanta United FC (8-2-0) split a pair of games, edging Orlando City SC 3-2 before falling 2-1 to Boca United FC. Jackson Conway led Atlanta’s offense with three goals over the weekend. Conway’s 43rd minute strike put Atlanta up 1-0 at halftime against Boca United, but the Florida side rallied with late goals from Giovanni Rodriguez (75′) and Leonardo Afonso (87′).

Second place Concorde Fire (7-2-0) collected all six points, storming past Boca United FC 4-0 on Saturday and narrowly defeating Orlando City 2-1 on Sunday. Six different players scored for Concorde’s well-balanced offense over the course of the two wins.

Third place Chargers SC (5-2-0) also swept a two-game set, downing Charlotte Soccer Academy 4-2 and Carolina Rapids 2-1. Jeffrey Copper (6′, 12′) and William Shuchart (18′, 38′) led the Chargers SC attack, each recording first half braces against Charlotte.

North Carolina FC Youth (6-2-1) also highlighted the Southeast Division with back-to-back wins, defeating Weston FC 4-2 and Kendall SC 1-0. Carolina racked up three second half goals by three different players against Weston FC after the teams went into halftime tied at 1-1. On Sunday, goalkeeper Trace Alphin and the Carolina defense recorded the team’s third clean sheet of the season. Justin Stone led the attack with a goal in each contest, including the game-winner against Kendall SC.

U-17/18

Northeast Division

Montreal Impact FC (6-0-0) kept its perfect start to the season going with another dominant effort, blowing out Seacoast United 5-0 on the road. Vincent Lamy recorded a brace to help spark the offense while the Montreal defense notched its third shutout of the fall.

New York City FC (5-0-3), the only other unbeaten side in the Northeast Division, also claimed its third clean sheet of the season in a 5-0 rout of FC Greater Boston Bolts. Veljko Petkovic‘s hat trick propelled NYCFC’s potent offense, as goalkeeper Alex Rando and the back line held Boston off the scoreboard.

Another New York side, BW Gottschee Academy (1-5-2) secured its first victory of the 2017-2018 campaign, blanking MLS academy New England Revolution 1-0. Julian Cabanillas scored the game-winner in the 30th minute.

Atlantic Division

New York Red Bulls (8-0-0) piled up 15 goals over the course of 8-2 and 7-0 wins over D.C. United and Richmond United. Jonathan Filipe, JP Marin and Preston Popp were among the leaders of the Red Bulls attack with three goals each on the weekend.

Second place Philadelphia Union (5-0-0) also maintained its unblemished record, shutting out PA Classics 4-0, in a game highlighted by a second half brace from Jeremy Rafanello and the Union’s third clean sheet of the season on the defensive side.

PDA (5-2-0) held on for a 1-0 shutout of Bethesda SC, preserving their advantage for the final 87 minutes after Dantouma Toure put the New Jersey side ahead with a goal less than three minutes into the game. U.S. Youth National team goalkeeper Hunter Pinho and the PDA back line combined for the team’s third straight clean sheet.

Baltimore Armour (4-1-2) swept a pair of road games, 5-1 over Continental FC DELCO and 2-0 over Bethesda SC. Jacob Williams netted three goals and Alexander Hood scored two over the course of the weekend, leading Baltimore’s offense. Goalkeeper Craig Eichelberger earned the clean sheet against Bethesda, while defenders David TombiniBryce Sullenger and Joshua Morgan each played the full 90.

Southeast Division

Orlando City SC (3-1-2) handed first place Atlanta United FC (6-1-2) its first loss of the season in a 2-1 result on Saturday, led by goals from Allen Seals (2′) and Caleb Martinez (53′). Orlando’s strong play continued Sunday with a 3-2 win over Concorde Fire, as three different players found the net.

Atlanta bounced back from Saturday’s result with a 7-0 performance against Boca United FC, highlighted by two-goal efforts from Jeremiah Luoma and James Brighton.

Third place North Carolina Youth FC (4-2-1) defeated second place Weston FC (3-1-1) on Saturday, 2-0. Robert Screen (60′) and Orlin Roque (64′) netted both goals in a five-minute span for Carolina. Weston FC bounced back on Sunday, piling up eight goals against NC Fusion. Kristopher Richard had a hat trick while Alfred Perez and Gabriel Muzy each had braces in the blowout for Weston.

Chargers SC earned its first win of the season Sunday on the road against Carolina Rapids by a 3-1 margin. The Florida side received scores from Edin Hernandez (39′) and Jaime Lopez (69′), and benefited from a Rapids own goal.
