FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – Mississippi Brilla opened its 2013 season with a convincing 6-0 victory over Ft Lauderdale Shulz Academy on Thursday evening. The fireworks started early, and continued throughout the match.

Brilla striker Fakhry Khulfan broke loose and was brought down in the box just 2 minutes into the game. Veteran midfielder Anteneh Lemma calmly converted the penalty kick for Brilla’s first goal of the season.

In the 12th minute, Lemma played a nice ball through to Khulfan who took the ball to the endline before slotting it back to Phillip Buffington. Buffington was able to control the bounce and volley his shot into the corner for a 2-0 lead.

Khulfan continued to be involved in the action with a goal of his own in the 20th minute. Brilla’s third goal of the game was assisted by Martin Gonzalez.

Just after halftime, Gonzalez and Khulfan connected again, with Gonzalez netting his first goal of the season in the 49th minute. Khulfan flicked a nifty ball to Gonzalez, who finished the goal with a 1v1 against the ‘keeper.

Khulfan was not finished, as he picked up his third assist in the 63rd minute. Victor France was the recipient this time, tallying the fifth goal of the night for Brilla. France added an assist of his own by linking up with his college teammate, Eduardo Cruz, in the 86th minute.

“We still have a lot of work to do, but it was a great start to the season,” said Head Coach Drew Courtney. “It was very encouraging to get 6 goals from 6 different players.”

“Finishing the game without allowing a goal was important,” added Assistant Coach Jesse Charles. “I think it will give our goalkeeper (Brendan Ledgeway) and back line a lot of confidence moving forward.”

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – It was a tale of two halves Thursday night in Shelby County as the River City Rovers were held to draw by league newcomer KW United FC.

The two halves, dominated by either team, were bound by one central theme: fouls. The teams combined for a massive 30 fouls resulting in six yellow cards and one red card. All that while managing zero goals and a paltry four shots on goal.

The Rovers (0-1-1 PDL) had the better of the play in the first half, outshooting KWUFC (0-0-1 PDL) 5-3, and having a majority of the possession, especially in their attacking third. Dylan Terry, the most dangerous Rover on the field in the half, had the best chance for the Rovers all game when he used a perfectly timed run to get behind the defense while John Manga played him a through ball. Terry had time and space to take it in on goal, but put his shot right at KW United’s keeper Nate Ingham.

Terry paced the Rovers in the half with four shots, including a burner that went just wide of the left post after another feed from Manga. The lone forward in the Rovers’ 4-5-1 formation, Manga combined well with Terry, one of the outside midfielders, on multiple occasions. Unfortunately for the Rovers that tandem would only last until the break, when Terry was subbed off after receiving a knock late in the half.

The second half was a different story, with the Rovers under pressure for a lot of the half and KW United getting the lion’s share of the chances. KW United outshot the Rovers 5-1 for the half, in addition to a 7-1 advantage on corners. They did all this while being down a man for the better part of 35 minutes. In the 57th minute KWUFC defender Jack Warburton took down John Manga on his way to goal and earned his second yellow of the match. The visitors had been pressuring the Rovers goal well, earning corners and coming close on a few headers.

Despite the disadvantage, KW United kept the pressure up and had the better of the play the rest of the way, smartly utilizing counterattacks and set pieces. The Rovers fell victim to empty possession, often settling for long balls out of the back, and had trouble keeping the ball in their offensive third. The best chance of the half fell to KWUFC’s Jay Chapman who was fed on a counter attack at the far post in stoppage time. Chapman trapped well and was in alone on Rover’s keeper Taylor Hafling, but the reigning Rover of the Week stuck a foot out to deflect the shot over the goal.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Second-half goals from defender Eric Miller and forward Reinaldo Brenes helped the Portland Timbers U-23s defeat division-rival Vancouver Whitecaps U-23 2-0 before 3,370 fans Thursday afternoon at JELD-WEN Field.

The 3,370 on hand for a Providence Health & Fitness Day at JELD-WEN Field was the second-largest attendance in the Premier Development League this season. Portland has drawn the two largest crowds in the league in 2013, with the team’s Health & Fitness Day match on May 16 against Sounders FC U23 drawing 3,681 fans.

With a third straight win to open the regular season, the Timbers U-23s (3-0-0, 9pts) move into a tie for first place in the PDL’s Northwest Division with Victoria Highlanders FC. Whitecaps FC U-23 (1-2-0, 3pts) remain in third place in the division.

After trading scoring chances in the second half, the Timbers U-23s broke through in the 63rd minute. A free kick from midfielder Jose Ribas was deflected away by a Whitecaps FC U-23 defender, and the loose ball fell to the foot of Miller just outside the penalty area. Miller drilled the half-volley past Whitecaps FC U-23 goalkeeper Simon Thomas for his second goal of the season.

The Timbers U-23s added a second goal 15 minutes from time, when a long cross by Miller found Brenes near the right post. Brenes, who had come on as a substitute in the 74th minute, calmly slipped the ball past Thomas to give the Timbers U-23s the insurance goal.

Timbers U-23s goalkeeper David Meves recorded three first-half saves to earn his second shutout of the season. Meves was tested from distance twice by Whitecaps FC U-23 midfielders Harpreet Lakhan and Gagandeep Dosanjh. Portland’s defense held Vancouver to just two shots in the second half.

A late goal mouth scramble in first-half stoppage time saw the Timbers U-23s with a chance to take a lead into halftime. After a Whitecaps FC U-23 turnover, Timbers U-23s forward Clark Phillips sent a cross into the box which resulted in a blocked shot attempted by Ribas. The deflection fell to forward Jaime Velasco and his follow-up effort from just outside the six-yard box was sent over the goal.

TAMPA, Fla. – The PDL announced today its Team of the Week for the third week of the season, with Michigan Bucks forward Zach Steinberger being honored as the Player of the Week. Steinberger played a role in all five goals for the Bucks in their 5-0 win against the Chicago Inferno, recording a hat trick and two assists, to lead Michigan to victory in the opening game of its PDL season.

Steinberger opened the scoring for the Bucks in the 19th minute, firing home from the top of the penalty area from a pass by Adam Montague. Steinberger then assisted on a pair of goals by Montague in the final five minutes before the break, giving the Bucks a 3-0 halftime lead, before finding the net again himself just before the hour mark, volleying home a finish from Stewart Givens’ long throw-in. Steinberger capped his performance with 18 minutes to go, completing his hat trick.

Steinberger was joined in the Team of the Week’s attack by Billy Forbes of the Southern West Virginia King’s Warriors, who had a pair of goals in his side’s season-opening victory against the West Virginia Chaos. Victoria’s Brett Levis completed the trio, scoring twice as the Highlanders took their third consecutive win to start the season with a victory against the Sounders FC U23.

Manny Andrade of the Real Boston Rams led the midfield contingent, scoring twice in the club’s first victory, a 3-1 win against the Vermont Voltage. Also selected was Ricardo Velasco, who had a pair of goals in FC Tucson’s 3-1 win against the Southern California Seahorses, and U.S. U20 international Eric Miller, who had the game-winning goal in the Portland Timbers U-23s’ 2-0 win against the Sounders.

Defensively, Oklahoma City FC’s Scott Parkinson earned selection after scoring in his side’s first victory in club history. Des Moines’ Taylor Diem, who scored the only goal and was a force defensively for the Menace in their 1-0 win against Winnipeg, also earned selection, as did Ido Ligety, who played a key role in the Jersey Express’ 2-0 win against the F.A. Euro – New York Magic. Orlando City U23s’ Kyle Fisher rounded out the quartet, scoring in his side’s 3-1 win against IMG Academy Bradenton, while Laredo’s Emmanuel Frias took the goalkeeping honors after recording a shutout in the Heat’s 2-0 win against West Texas.

TUKWILA, Wash. — Nearly two hours after the last fan left Starfire Stadium on Sunday, Seattle Reign owner Bill Predmore remained on the field with head coach and general manager Laura Harvey.

They sat on the turf, in deep discussion. The stadium’s floodlights remained lit just for them, like the spotlight that has been on them since before the National Women’s Soccer League season started. The latest setback, a 3-0 loss to Sky Blue FC, made the lights burn brighter again.

The Reign players sensed it. As the team walked toward the locker room, almost every player had her head down and a grim look on her face. The “we’ll-get-them-next-time” attitude from the 4-2 loss to the Washington Spirit three days earlier had nearly vanished. At 0-6-1, smiles don’t come easily.

“We just can’t seem to get a break,” Jess Fishlock said, exasperated.

Debutant goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer added: “No one’s going to sit here and say that losing is fun this many games in a row. We just want to really go out there and get a result.”

After the controversy surrounding Reign’s early existence, the club’s first win cannot come soon enough for those in charge. After beating out the well-established Seattle Sounders Women ownership group for the Seattle NWSL franchise, Predmore hired a foreign coach in Harvey. Then, on the eve of the team’s first match, general manager Amy Carnell resigned.

Fast forward a couple weeks, and ticket sales became the concern. A crowd of 2,618 for the home opener against FC Kansas City was larger than expected based on pre-sales, and underwhelming counts of 1,011 and 1,046 followed last week. Seattle seems to be split between the Sounders Women, playing in the W-League, and the upstart club that many see as taking a franchise that was rightfully the Sounders’.

On the field, injuries and player absences piled up quickly. It started in the allocation process, when U.S. Soccer placed Megan Rapinoe in Seattle despite her being under contract with Lyon in France until the end of May (this week, Rapinoe revealed that she may do the same thing next season).

Then, the club announced Amy Rodriguez was pregnant and would miss the entire season. Hope Solo needed wrist surgery. Kate Deines and Elli Reed went down with ankle injuries last week. In the latest twist, Jenny Ruiz is suspended a game after being sent off for two cautionable offenses on Sunday.

With shortages in the back, midfielder Kaylyn Kyle played center back on Sunday, and winger Kirsten Dallstream moved to outside back. Ruiz, normally an outside back, moved to the middle. Harvey seemingly exhausted her back-four options before Ruiz saw her red card. When Solo makes her Reign debut, she will inherit a defense that has conceded a league-worst 15 goals.

The attack hasn’t fared much better. Set pieces and counter-attacks have been the main providers for a largely toothless offense (minus some sublime finishing from Lindsay Taylor on a side volley and Christine Nairn on a diving header). Seattle scored four goals in its first seven games, giving it the worst goals-per-game average in the NWSL.

The Reign is struggling to gain traction, both on the field and off. The club has no established fan base from previous play, and it has an owner who is as new to professional sports as his team’s brand is to the Seattle market. The game day experience is improving slowly after not even roster sheets were available for fans at the home opener.

Of course, it hasn’t all been negative. Predmore invested heavily in the club’s Web streaming, hiring Bootstrapper Studios for the broadcasts, which led to some impressive production values. Fishlock has proven to be one of the league’s most talented midfielders, and she drew the Portland Thorns supporters’ ire with an enthusiastic goal celebration at JELD-WEN Field.

Saturday’s upcoming game against the Thorns, the first match-up of the new rivalry in Seattle, is an opportunity for change. Despite the teams’ polarity in the standings, rivalry matches always seem to transcend statistical trends. The Thorns’ home opener between the two clubs was about as competitive as Seattle has looked all season, and Alex Morgan’s star power should be enough to attract even casual fans to the game. “We’re hopeful that we’ll get more of the general soccer crowd,” Predmore said over the phone on Wednesday.

At the same time, the game provides a study in that polarity. Busloads of Portland supporters are expected to make the trip north, just a fraction of the over-10,000 fans the club averages at home. The town known as Soccer City, USA, has embraced its new team — funded and fully backed by the MLS Timbers. As much as the traveling support hopes to show up his club, Predmore said, he also thinks they want to expose the city of Seattle itself. “I hope the city and the soccer supporters will muster a response there,” he said.

If they do, and if some of them enjoy the experience enough to become regular customers, it will be another sign of slow progress. A result of any kind against the high-flying Thorns would provide a much-needed morale boost in the locker room. As players return from injury and from abroad — Rapinoe, Solo, Deines and Reed should be back by mid-June — the team they represent could be drastically different, and Saturday’s game could prove to be the turning point.

It’s Predmore and Harvey’s unenviable task to figure out how to get to that point, how to get the club’s first win and how to crack a market that loves its Sounders and is skeptical of any other brand. So they sat on the Starfire turf on Sunday, long after the stadium emptied, beaten but not yet broken.

TAMPA, Fla. – USL PRO named its Team of the Week for Week Nine of the season on Tuesday, with the Charleston Battery’s Dane Kelly earning Player of the Week honors after scoring the game-winning goal in the Battery’s 1-0 win against the Houston Dynamo Reserves on Sunday morning. The win moved the Battery into second place in the USL PRO standings, and handed Houston its first reserve defeat this season.

Kelly proved a threat from the off against the Dynamo Reserves, making good runs in behind the defense and helping create attacking opportunities throughout. Kelly was rewarded in the 35th minute as the Battery took a quick free kick that released Emmanuel Adjetay down the left, and his cross to the far post was volleyed home by Kelly for his second goal of the season.

Joining Kelly on the Team of the Week was his Battery teammate Colin Falvey, who put in a strong performance defensively as the Battery withstood late Houston pressure to claim victory. Falvey made a key block of a shot by Brian Ownby, sending the ball out for a corner, and kept his back line organized throughout the contest.

Falvey was joined in the Team of the Week defense by the Charlotte Eagles’ Shaun Francis, who scored a spectacular goal to give his side a 1-0 win against Charleston last Tuesday night. Wilmington’s Jamel Wallace was also selected after scoring in the Hammerheads’ 2-1 win against Los Angeles on Saturday, while Richmond’s Andrew Dykstra earned selection after making a number of key saves to earn the Kickers a point against Los Angeles on Friday.

Los Angeles’ Shay Spitz earned a berth in the midfield after his industriousness helped the Blues rally to claim a late equalizer against the Kickers on Friday night. Pittsburgh’s Matt Dallman was also selected after recording assists on both goals by the Riverhounds in their 2-2 draw with Dayton. The Dutch Lions’ Tjeerd Westdijk also earned selection, scoring the game-tying goal and recording an assist in the same contest.

Orlando’s Erik Ustruck was selected after scoring the game-winning goal for the Lions in their 1-0 win against Rochester, while Harrisburg’s Don Anding rounded out the quintet after a standout performance that saw him assist on Sainey Touray’s opening goal and prove a threat for much of the game down the flank. Completing the side is Orlando’s Dom Dwyer, who earns his fourth consecutive selection after scoring another pair of goals to take his league-leading total to 12 in the Lions’ 2-2 draw with Harrisburg.

SANFORD, Fla.— The Orlando City U23s drew VSI Tampa Bay FC 1-1 on Wednesday May 22, at Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford, Fla. Striker Tyler Blackwood equalized the match for the Lions in stoppage time, notching his third goal of the 2013 season.

“I’m really pleased with the players’ attitude and desire not to be beaten,” said Head Coach Paul Shaw. “There’s a lot to work on, and we need to improve in many areas. One thing that I cannot doubt is their character.”

The Lions began the match struggling to maintain possession, but as time wore on they began combining more effectively in different areas of the pitch. Midfielder Michael Annarumma was very active in many of the Lions’ combination plays, and provided the U23s’ first chance of the match.

In the 24th minute of play, Annarumma received the ball just outside the 18 yard box and struck a powerful effort that went just over the bar, keeping VSI Goalkeeper Brenton Muahammad on his toes. VSI had several chances of their own in the first half, but the U23s held solid defensive lines and seemed to be a more cohesive unit in only their third match together in Orlando City colors.

The Lions spent the rest of the first half controlling the tempo but were unable to produce any quality chances, despite their probing efforts. As a result, both sides headed into the break tied 0-0. However, the second half began with Orlando City being the more aggressive side in the opening minutes. Midfielder Itode Fubara set the tone early in the second half with a powerful effort to force a corner in the 59th minute of play. In light of Fubara’s effort, the U23s began sending more numbers forward- creating several opportunities for multiple Lions.

VSI, on the other hand, took advantage of the Lions sending a large amount of players forward and began creating opportunities through counter attacks. After numerous chances on goal, the Tampa side would eventually breakthrough in the 70th minute of play when Midfielder Stiven Salinas found Midfielder Josey Portillo from a corner kick. Portillo controlled the ball well and calmly struck his effort past Goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, giving VSI a 1-0 lead.

In the 80th minute the Lions nearly responded when Striker Tyler Blackwood weaved through the VSI defense on the left hand side of the pitch, and found fellow Striker Ian Svantesson- who narrowly missed the target. As the half continued, finding the back of the net became increasingly difficult for the Lions, when Midfielder Paul Clowes was sent off in 83rd minute after receiving a second yellow card.

Despite being reduced to ten men, the Lions would remain persistent in their efforts to equalize the match and would be rewarded in stoppage time. After a series of deflections in VSI’s 18 yard box, Striker Tyler Blackwood capitalized on VSI’s poor defending and slotted the ball home with less than a minute remaining. The referee blew the final whistle shortly after Blackwood’s conversion- resulting in a 1-1 draw.

The Canada Women’s National Team has announced its 19-player roster for the Sunday 2 June (16.30 local kick-off) Women’s International Friendly against USA at BMO Field in Toronto.

The squad features 14 players who were part of Canada’s bronze-medal-winning roster at London 2012, including Boston Breakers defender Rhian Wilkinson.

In addition to the Olympic group, youngsters Kadeisha Buchanan, Tiffany Cameron and Ashley Lawrence continue to keep their places in the senior team after previous involvement with the side early in 2013.

Defender Kylla Sjoman earns her second-consecutive call-up to the WNT after making an apperance in Canada’s last match against England on 7 April.

Rachel Quon, a 21-year-old defender for Chicago Red Stars in NWSL, has earned her first call-up to a Canada camp.

Striker Melissa Tancredi rejoins the group for the first time since the team won its Olympic bronze medal against France in August 2012.

Of the 19 players named to the squad 10 featured in the Olympic semi-final between Canada and USA on 7 August 2012 in Manchester, UK.

“It was important for us to bring in a blend of youth and experience for this game,” said Head Coach John Herdman.

“We feel we have a good blend of players that have experience playing against USA – but we are also sticking to our task of preparing for the future.”

The Canada-USA match at BMO Field sold out on the first day of public on-sale and Herdman is looking to Canadian supporters to give the team a taste of the passionate home support it is anticipating at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.

“The fans are going to play a massive part in the game,” said Herdman.

“We will be playing in front of packed house and all of the pressure that goes with that. It’s important for this group of players, particularly the young ones, to get a real sense of the support we are looking forward to in 2015.

“We know the crowd will be in full voice and right behind us.”

Canada will open the doors to its training session on Thursday 30 May, ahead of the sold-out Canada-USA Rematch in Toronto.

More than an opportunity for fans to get an insider look at how Head Coach John Herdman and his side prepare for the friendly, the session will feature the unveiling of a new Umbro Canada Soccer kit through a special presentation.

“It’s an opportunity for young players to see their heroes up-close and personal,” said Herdman.

“It will be a great window into the preparation that goes on at the top level and the type of environment we try create for our national teams.”

The Canada-USA match itself on Sunday 2 June will be broadcast live coast-to-coast in Canada on all four Sportnset regional networks (16.30 ET / 13.30 PT).
