Chapter 17: HE’S NOT PSYCHIC – ROOKIE: Surviving Your Freshman Year of College Soccer

ROOKIE Cover JPEGDon’t expect your coach to know things that you don’t tell him. If you show up to practice in a funk and that negatively affects the way you’re playing, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to hear about it from your coach. Why? Because that’s part of his job. Don’t expect him to know that the reason you’re in a funk is because your boyfriend is being a pinhead.

You are expected to live up to certain expectations. If there are mitigating circumstances that will compromise your ability to meet those expectations, then get out in front of the issue and let the coach know what’s affecting you; otherwise he’s just going to assume that your level of effort or concentration is substandard, and at that point you’ve dug yourself a hole.

Your coach may be a lot of things but he certainly isn’t psychic. If you have a problem that your coach might need to know about, tell him. You can’t expect him to know what’s going on in your life if you don’t actually share what’s going on in your life.
